The General Assembly is assembling in Kentucky and its a good time for nonprofit organizations (NPO's) to put their thinking caps on with regard to advocacy efforts.
Here are 5 tips for NPO's to keep in mind:
1. Prior to contacting or meeting with your representative(s), volunteers should be trained on the specifics of the organization (mission, budget, accomplishments, barriers, etc.).
If possible, take a copy of a newsletter and/or annual report to the meeting. Supplemental material (although, not too much material), can be very helpful to paint a complete picture of the NPO as well as leave a physical "footprint" in their office long after you've left.
2. All volunteers and staff should be able to answer the following:
- What is the bill number of the proposed legislation?
- What is the point? (of the legislation the NPO supports or opposes)
- Who cares? (and can benefit from the proposed legislative change)
- What's the end result if the legislation passes...or doesn't?
- How much will this cost taxpayers?
3. Volunteers and staff should be prepped on the legislative process. For example, they must know the steps involved in creating/amending a municipal ordinance, state law or federal appropriation bill from beginning to end, as well as which committees will be reviewing the legislation.
4. When meeting with policymakers, volunteers and staff should be:
Brief Clear and concise (do not embellish facts/figures for dramatic effect--this will only diminish your credibility and trustworthiness) Persuasive but not threatening, argumentative or demanding Persistent Thankful
5. Maintain communication with your legislator(s) throughout the year, not only when you want something. And always keep him/her on your email and/or mailing lists for organizational updates and invitations to events.
